New inclusive safeguarding module puts duty of care front and centre of Coaching Week

The inaugural Coaching Week, 4-10 June, sees the launch of a brand-new Safeguarding Deaf and Disabled Children in Sport eLearning module.

Available as part of UK Coaching’s Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport renewal suite, and developed in partnership with NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU), the module is a convenient way for those coaching to update their understanding of safeguarding with a focus on how sport and physical activity can be made safe and inclusive for deaf and disabled children.

Those wishing to renew their safeguarding training can choose the module as one of three options available through the Safeguarding Online Renewal Package offered by UK Coaching – the others being Safe Digital Communication and Positive Sports Parents. Coaches can then go on to take the compulsory Safeguarding and Children Refresher training module to complete their renewal training and access the renewal certificate.

UK Coaching’s Development Lead Officer for Children, David Turner, said:

We know that many coaches are strapped for time but are serious about their continuing professional development. The benefit of eLearning is that they can do it at a time that suits them. What’s more, our style of online learning offers learners the opportunity to learn-by-doing, making decisions based on real-life stories and scenarios of coaching disabled children.

“Needless to say, those who are coaching have a responsibility for their participants. It is of the utmost importance to create a safe, inclusive environment for those taking part in sport and physical activity and for all people involved to be treated with respect.

“This course puts coaches at the heart of their learning; letting them practise their decision-making skills; helping them gain a deeper and longer-lasting understanding of safeguarding; and aiding their delivery of great coaching.”

The Director of the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit, Anne Tiivas, said:

We are delighted to collaborate with UK Coaching on the launch of this; the first nationally available learning resource to address the importance of safeguarding deaf and disabled children and young people, specifically, in a sports context.

“We feel this training will help to equip coaches with the information they need to develop their confidence working with this vulnerable group and ensure every young person’s needs are front and centre of coaching activity.”

For more than 20 years, UK Coaching has worked closely with the NSPCC’s CPSU to set the right standards and to raise awareness among coaches of how to recognise and respond to matters of safeguarding children and adults at risk, working with governing bodies of sport to train and educate coaches.

Coaching Week is a week-long celebration of great coaching across the nation, providing a platform to empower athletes and coaches to celebrate their community, as well as highlight the broader benefits of coaching.
