How to Deliver Engaging Sessions for Young People

Expand your knowledge to support positive experiences for 14 to 25 year olds and ensure sustained participation

UK Coaching was formerly known as Sports Coach UK. We changed our name after expanding our support as an organisation.

Research from Sport England shows a dropout rate across most sports around the ages of 14 to 25.

This is a practical-based workshop that will develop your coaching to help you better meet the needs of this age group.

Through the use of practical examples you will learn about new participants’ needs, including how to build their self-confidence, motivation and self-esteem.

This in turn will help you improve the coaching experience of young people and help to ensure they keep coming back for more.

Understanding and implementing the ‘C’ system framework (connection; confidence; character; creativity; caring and compassion; competence) has been a game-changer for many coaches and is an essential component of this workshop, which will help you understand how your coaching fits into a much wider agenda than sport.

You will learn how to identify:

  • different stages of young people’s participation development
  • differences in coaching styles that meet young people’s requirements
  • differences in coaching styles in different environments: schools, satellite clubs, colleges, universities and clubs.
  • you will be able to include the ‘C’ system approach in your coaching, helping to aid the development of your athletes as both people and performers.

You will receive a copy of How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: Developing Adults and Young People Through Sport at the workshop to guide you in your future coaching.

Each section of the 50-page book contains thought-provoking questions for you to consider using self-reflection and diagnosis of your own methods.

There are spaces where you are encouraged to set short, medium and long-term goals for achieving the good practice outlined in the book.

Each of the sections expanding on the ‘C’ system will contain explanations of the relevance of the ‘C’ being examined, and the summary will focus on the three phases of developing, sustaining and rejoining participation.

What Coaches Think

This was such a fun and informative workshop that I would have no hesitation in recommending it to all coaches. It’s had a massive impact on the way I coach, with attendance and retention at my sessions improving dramatically. I found it fascinating that so many of the ideas/games are transferable to your own sport. It speaks volumes that I would go again!

I’d been on a few [UK Coaching] workshops before and had found them very good. This one really stood out as I saw it as a great opportunity to find out how I can improve and better engage 14–25 year olds so we could reduce the dropout rate at the clubs I coach at. It was an interesting, refreshing, energising and good value workshop.
